When someone contacts us about a memorial piece, we know they're coming to us during a difficult time. Recently, a customer reached out wanting to create something special with a photo engraved slate with text 'GBNF Ride free FUSE'. They sent over different photographs and an AI-generated mock-up showing what they had in mind.
The project needed careful attention to detail. Memorial work always does. This particular piece was larger than many we do, measuring 500mm by 370mm by 8mm, which gave us plenty of space to work with the photograph and text. But size alone doesn't guarantee quality. That depends on the image we start with and the settings we dial in on the laser.
Getting the Right Image Made All the Difference
The customer's AI mock-up gave us a good idea of the layout and the exact wording they wanted. But the image quality just wasn't good enough for laser engraving on slate. We had to go back and request the original photograph.
High resolution matters. Good contrast matters even more. When you're engraving a photograph onto slate, the laser creates different shades by varying how deeply it marks the surface. Poor contrast in the source image means poor definition in the finished piece. We've done enough photo engraving to know that cutting corners at this stage wastes everyone's time.
Test Pieces Save Time and Slate
In the bottom right-hand corner of our workspace, we keep small throwaway pieces of slate specifically for testing. Before we touched the main 500mm x 370mm piece, we ran test engravings to dial in our settings. Power levels, speed, frequency. All of these affect how the photograph translates onto the slate surface.
To be honest, the text part was easy. 'GBNF Ride free FUSE' didn't present any challenges. The photograph was the tricky bit. That's where our experience with photo engraving on slate really came into play. We adjusted the settings until the test piece showed us we'd got it right.
Getting it wrong on a test scrap costs pennies. Getting it wrong on the customer's memorial piece isn't an option.
MDF Spacers Position the Slate Properly
We cut MDF spacers to support the slate on the laser bed. This isn't about being fancy. It's practical. The spacers positioned the 500mm x 370mm slate in the centre of the bed and held it stable so the laser could work efficiently.
When you're engraving a piece this size, any movement or misalignment shows up in the finished product. The spacers we cut specifically for this job kept everything exactly where it needed to be throughout the entire engraving process.
Photo Engraved Slate Holds Up Outdoors
We get a lot of enquiries for memorial products. Slate works particularly well for this because it engraves beautifully and stands up to Irish weather. Many of these pieces end up outside, and slate handles that without fading or deteriorating.
The photo engraved slate we created with text 'GBNF Ride free FUSE' will last for years, whether it's placed indoors or exposed to the elements. That durability matters when you're creating something meant to honour someone's memory.
We always send a preview mock-up from Lightburn before we start the actual engraving. This lets customers check the exact wording and placement. For this project, that confirmation step ensured the writing appeared exactly where the customer wanted it, with the photograph positioned properly.
Packaging Memorial Pieces with Care
Once the engraving was complete, packaging became the next priority. A 500mm x 370mm slate piece isn't small, and it's certainly not light. We packaged it securely so it would arrive safely.
Slate can chip if it's knocked around during transit. We've developed our packaging approach over eleven years of sending custom work all over the country. The customer needs to open a box and find their memorial piece in perfect condition, not damaged.
Memorial Work Comes with Responsibility
These projects are always a bit emotional. People contact us when they've experienced loss, and they're trusting us to create something meaningful. We look forward to doing this kind of work because it matters, even though we know the circumstances behind each order are difficult for the customer.
This photo engraved slate with was one of many memorial pieces we've created, but each one gets the same attention. We run the test engraving. We confirm the details. We package it properly. That's not just good business practice. It's treating people's memories with respect.
