Laser Engraving in Ireland: What It Is, What You Can Engrave, and Why TechCreate Does It Best

When someone asks me what we do at TechCreate, I could say “laser engraving” and leave it at that. But honestly, that wouldn’t tell you much. Because laser engraving isn’t just one thing—it’s photographs etched into granite memorial plaques, it’s corporate logos on wooden medals, it’s personalised glasses engraved at music festivals, and it’s braille signage for public buildings. After 11 years in this business here in Ballinagh, County Cavan, I’ve seen just about every type of laser engraving project you can imagine.

Whether you’re a printing shop looking to expand your offerings without investing in expensive equipment, a business planning a corporate event, or someone searching for a unique memorial piece, understanding what laser engraving can actually do makes all the difference. So let me walk you through exactly what’s possible, what materials work best, and how we approach each project at TechCreate.

What Materials Can You Laser Engrave?

This is usually the first question people ask, and the answer tends to surprise them. We can laser engrave slate, wood, acrylic, leather, granite, and metal—quite a lot of different materials, really.

But not all materials perform equally. For metal work, stainless steel comes up beautifully on our fibre laser. The contrast is crisp and the detail is exceptional. For outdoor applications, though, I’d steer you towards slate or granite. We’ve created some lovely photographs and images on granite for memorial pieces that have stood up brilliantly to Irish weather.

Wood is always popular—there’s something warm and natural about laser engraving on timber that people respond to. And then you’ve got your more specialised materials. We work with laser laminates, particularly a knife silver laser laminate that produces stunning results with photographs. We’ve used that for memorial pieces where the family wanted something a bit different from traditional granite.

How Does Laser Engraving Differ from Laser Cutting?

People often assume these are completely different processes, but they’re really two sides of the same coin. It all comes down to depth and power.

For an engrave, you’re just burning the surface layer of the material. For a cut, you’re going deeper—right through the material. The clever bit is that it’s all controlled by the software we use, which is called LightBurn. That software controls all of the power settings that determine whether you’re engraving or cutting.

This is one of the advantages of working with an experienced laser engraving business. We know exactly what settings work for each material and each application. A printing shop outsourcing to us gets that expertise without having to learn it all themselves through expensive trial and error.

Can You Laser Engrave Photos onto Different Materials?

Absolutely, and this is where laser engraving gets really interesting. We can engrave photos onto wood, metal, and even glass—though I’ll be honest with you, glass doesn’t give the best results. We’ve done some photos on glass, but I wouldn’t recommend it for anything where quality is paramount.

Wood and stone, particularly granite or slate, work brilliantly with a good quality photograph. The detail you can achieve is remarkable. We’ve created memorial plaques with family photos that capture expressions and details beautifully.

That knife silver laser laminate I mentioned earlier is another excellent option for photographic work. The contrast and clarity you get on that material is something special. For memorial pieces especially, where the image matters so much to the family, we’ve produced some really lovely work using that material.

What’s the Finest Detail TechCreate Can Achieve?

This is where our Thunder laser machines really shine. We can work down to millimetres or fractions of a millimetre. Honestly, we could probably engrave something that your human eye would struggle to read—I certainly struggle to read it without my glasses on.

This level of precision matters for all sorts of projects. Corporate logos with fine text, intricate patterns on wooden medals, detailed artwork on memorial plaques—the ability to capture very fine detail separates professional laser engraving from amateur work.

For printing shops outsourcing engraving work, this precision means you can confidently take on projects that require detailed reproduction. Your customers get professional results, and you don’t have to turn away work because it’s too intricate.

How Quickly Can TechCreate Turn Around an Engraving Project?

Speed matters, especially when you’re a printing shop with a customer waiting. Once you have an idea of what you want us to do, you’d send that through to us. If you have a finished file, it’s obviously much quicker. If you need us to do some file edits or even create a file from scratch, we can do that—more on that in a moment.

Generally, once we have the file, we can turn the job around within five working days. Now, timing does depend on the time of year. We get busier around the Christmas holidays, and sometimes it takes a bit longer then. But as a rule, from you contacting us with an enquiry to having the finished piece delivered to you anywhere in Ireland via An Post or DPD, it’s usually about a week to 10 days.

That turnaround time makes outsourcing to TechCreate practical for printing businesses. You’re not making promises you can’t keep to your customers.

Do You Need Print-Ready Artwork?

Here’s something that sets us apart: you don’t need print-ready artwork at all. You can just tell us your idea, and we can do all the artwork for you.

We have customers who send us a photograph of an idea they’ve had. Some have even created something using AI and sent us the image. We then prepare the artwork that’s needed for the project using LightBurn. This design service is part of what we do.

For printing shops, this is particularly valuable. You can take the order from your customer, gather their ideas and rough concepts, and send them to us. We’ll handle the technical preparation for laser engraving. Your customer gets exactly what they want, and you don’t need to become a laser engraving design expert.

Can You Bring Laser Engraving to Events?

Our mobile laser engraving service is brilliant for corporate events, markets, and festivals. We have laser bolts—the smallest of our Thunder laser machines—that we can bring to different locations.

We’ve been at Electric Picnic Music Festival and Altogether Now Music Festival, and we’ve done corporate events in Dublin. One memorable project involved engraving names onto luggage tags at a Nolita in Dublin. It’s very popular for corporate events especially—there’s something engaging about watching the laser work in real time.

If you’re a business planning a product launch, staff appreciation event, or trade show presence, mobile laser engraving creates that memorable, personalised touch that people talk about afterwards.

After 11 years of laser engraving work across Ireland, I can tell you that the possibilities really are endless. From one-off memorial pieces to large commercial braille signage projects, from wooden medals for school sports days to personalised corporate gifts, laser engraving adds that custom, professional touch that makes things special.

If you’re a printing shop looking to expand your services without the capital investment in laser equipment, or if you need laser engraving for any project, get in touch with us at TechCreate. Send us your ideas—even if they’re just rough concepts—and we’ll show you what’s possible. You can reach us here in Ballinagh, County Cavan, and we ship finished work all over Ireland. Let’s talk about what we can create together.
